A registry study by the University of Oulu and the University of Eastern Finland finds that 70% of antipsychotic use among community-dwelling older adults occurs off-label, meaning prescribed for purposes not officially approved. Off-label use was associated with higher rates of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions and increased opioid use. The findings highlight the need for safer prescribing practices, clearer monitoring guidelines, and alternative treatment options for older adults.
