
Professor Marta Kolanowska from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection at the University of Lodz has been recognized as part of the “Lodz Women Initiators” project organized by the Museum of the City of Lodz. The initiative highlights women shaping the city’s culture and heritage. A leading orchid researcher in the Department of Geobotany and Plant Ecology, Prof. Kolanowska has described over 400 previously unknown orchid species, discovered during expeditions to remote Andean regions such as Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. An upcoming museum exhibition will feature her tropical field photographs and expedition equipment. The year 2025 has been declared the Year of Lodz Women Initiators to honor outstanding women who have made significant contributions to culture, science, sports, and society.
