The PENdroid high school competition took place on Friday at the Circular Economy University Center of Pannon University’s Nagykanizsa Campus. For the twelfth time, the nation’s most talented high school app development teams competed on the Kanizsa campus.
In recent years, PENdroid has become one of the campus’s most significant events, attracting growing interest nationwide. A total of 34 teams participated in the online rounds, with the top ten advancing to Friday’s final. In the final, teams had eight hours to develop a program, alongside submitting a pre-prepared application. This year’s challenge focused on solving a problem related to smart cities. The jury evaluated each program’s graphics, technical development, programming skills, and creativity.
“Every year we find programs that we can recommend for Google Play. Some teams allow us to submit them, while others prefer to release them under their own names. There are always truly marketable solutions,” said Tibor Holczinger, associate professor at the Circular Economy University Center.
As in previous years, a local Kanizsa team made it to the top ten. Students from Cserháti Technical School finished fifth last year. During the idea-generation phase, the teams were observed to work with equal distribution of tasks, though smaller teams handled multiple roles simultaneously.
The online rounds saw more participants than in previous years, with finalists coming from different regions of Hungary, including Baja, Budapest, and Eger. The competition concluded Friday evening with the official award ceremony.
