The University of Oulu, in collaboration with the University of Lapland, offers preparatory training for immigrants aiming to pursue university studies in Finnish. The program, part of the “Towards University” project, focuses on strengthening Finnish language skills, academic writing, oral communication, and interview techniques to help participants succeed in university applications and entrance exams.
Sadeep Rathnayake from Sri Lanka, who moved to Oulu in 2022, credits the training for boosting both his language skills and confidence, although he has not yet gained admission to a degree program. The program also familiarizes participants with Finnish university culture, emphasizing a supportive and less competitive learning environment.
Project staff encourage persistence and highlight the importance of utilizing immigrant potential for Finnish society, noting that the path to higher education and employment may take time but is achievable with the right support.
