The RADIANT project (Realising Dynamic Value Chains for Underutilised Crops), coordinated by the Center for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF) at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Universidade Catolica Portuguesa Porto, concludes with significant contributions to sustainable agriculture in Europe.
Over four years, the project produced more than 40 open access scientific publications, participatory tools such as the agrobiodiversity toolbox, and policy proposals recognizing the value of underutilized crops. More than 45 farmers actively engaged in local and European networks, supporting the transition toward resilient and just agricultural systems.
The final General Assembly was held on July 21, 2025, at UCP Porto, featuring presentations on participatory characterization of local varieties, mapping value chains, agricultural best practices, and policy recommendations. The RARE FOOD FAIR showcased rare foods and promoted awareness of biodiversity, featuring products such as acorn flour, leafy green juices, and novel snacks.
The project’s legacy reinforces the importance of underutilized crops in promoting food sovereignty, climate resilience, and agricultural diversification across Europe.
