Jiří Zima, Rector of Charles University, briefly met with Petr Pavel on Tuesday evening at Albertov before the president’s discussion with students titled War in Ukraine and the Role of Czechia. The event, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was organized by the Faculty of Science.During the meeting, the rector informed the president about delays in the Albertov Campus construction project, the largest infrastructure investment in the university’s modern history. Due to a two-year delay caused by archaeological research and previous project management issues, the university will not be able to fully use the funding allocated by the Ministry of Education. The unused portion will return to the state budget, although the funds originate from the European Commission. University leadership plans to open discussions with the government to avoid losing the remaining allocation permanently. The subsequent student debate, moderated by political geographer Libor Jelen, focused on the European Union’s role in the war and the current frontline situation. The discussion was livestreamed on the Faculty of Science’s YouTube channel.Since the beginning of the invasion in 2022, Charles University has supported nearly 1,000 Ukrainian students and more than 60 academics, providing financial aid, facilities, social support, and Czech language instruction.
