University of Vaasa doctoral researcher Michaela Hissa demonstrates that alternative fuels derived from recycled lubricants and pulp industry by-products can lower emissions in marine and off-road engines. Blending renewable naphtha and marine gas oil with fossil diesel reduces smoke, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate emissions without major engine modifications. These drop-in fuels offer a transitional solution to make existing engines more climate-friendly while supporting the shift toward sustainable energy use.
