Semmelweis University experts are cautioning that beauty treatments like false eyelashes and lash lifts can trigger serious eye problems, especially in people with allergies or sensitive skin. Dr. Amarilla Barcsay-Veres from the university’s Department of Ophthalmology says reactions often stem from chemicals in the glue, which are strong allergens.
Symptoms can appear within hours, ranging from eyelid swelling, redness, and itching to pain, tearing, and sensitivity to light. In severe cases, glue residues may cause corneal inflammation or even ulcers that threaten vision. Those with eczema, allergic rhinitis, or asthma are at higher risk of reacting to the adhesives.
“False lashes may look appealing, but repeated exposure can worsen allergic reactions over time and even damage your natural lashes,” Dr. Barcsay-Veres warned. Inflammation along the eyelid margins, known as blepharitis, can develop from poor hygiene, leading to lash thinning and loss.
The ophthalmologist also advises caution when combining false lashes with contact lenses, which can heighten infection risk. Patients should practice strict hygiene and avoid sleeping in daytime lenses. If symptoms arise, false lashes should be removed immediately and a doctor consulted.
