
Gliwice – The Silesian University of Technology has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Professor Mirosław Chudek, Doctor Honoris Causa, a distinguished expert in geomechanics, underground construction, and mining environmental protection. He died on 6 August 2025 at the age of 90.
Professor Chudek dedicated his entire professional career to the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation, formerly the Faculty of Mining and Geology, at the Silesian University of Technology. His scientific contributions included pioneering theories on rock mass deformation, underground structure stability, and innovative methods for calculating mining support loads. His work resulted in over 300 publications and 73 patents, including 22 books and 18 monographs.
As a mentor, he supervised 31 doctoral theses, 11 habilitations, and guided over 400 engineering graduates. He served in numerous leadership roles within the university and collaborated with institutions in Ukraine, China, the Czech Republic, and Vietnam. For his achievements, he was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Cross of Merit, the Medal of National Education, and many other honours.
A memorial Mass will be held on 12 August 2025 at 11:00 at the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Katowice-Brynów, followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Częstochowa.
The Silesian University of Technology expressed condolences to his family, honouring him as both a world-class scientist and a generous mentor.
