A new international study led by the University of Galway shows that using wood more efficiently can play a key role in combating climate change. Researchers found that low-value wood can first be used to manufacture products such as particleboard before being converted into bioenergy, with carbon captured and stored underground. This approach, combining cascading wood use with Bioenergy and Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), provides long-term climate benefits that are more resilient than leaving forests unharvested. The strategy also helps EU countries, including Ireland, meet legally-binding climate neutrality targets by 2050.Lead scientists Dr George Bishop, Professor David Styles, and Dr James Gaffey highlight the need for investment in carbon capture infrastructure and sustainable forest management to maximize the climate impact.
