Soproni Egyetem (University of Sopron) recently hosted a four-member delegation of Chinese investors and researchers from Shandong Province for a two-day visit (June 18–19), initiating strategic talks aimed at deepening cooperation in forestry, wood industry development, and sustainable innovation.
Led by the rector Prof. Dr. Attila Fábián, the university outlined plans to establish a joint research and service center in Sopron, designed to support both Hungarian and Chinese (specifically Shandong-based) wood industry companies. The center would foster knowledge exchange, enhance export opportunities to both the Chinese and European markets, and generate long-term institutional revenues for the university through high-impact services.
“This potential collaboration could mark a new era for Soproni Egyetem—Hungary’s first carbon-neutral university—in both industry and innovation,” stated Prof. Dr. Fábián. “Our partners are committed to aligning industrial development with environmental protection and sustainable growth, which resonates deeply with our university’s mission.”
Key areas of discussion included robotic technologies, climate-conscious forestry, and green material development. The university showcased its capabilities in bio-based material R&D, sustainability services, startup ecosystem, accredited product testing, and academic-industrial training programs.
The talks also explored investment opportunities for Chinese wood companies seeking Hungarian industrial land. A key goal is to position Sopron as a hub for Europe-bound Chinese manufacturers—backed by a strong academic base and supported by regional logistics infrastructure.
GYSEV CARGO Zrt., a logistics partner, expressed full support for the initiative, highlighting plans for a new logistics park and enhanced rail electrification efforts that align with green development goals.
Li Changgui, lead researcher at the Shandong Forestry Academy, emphasized Sopron’s strategic importance in future logistics cooperation and acknowledged the University of Sopron as a valuable scientific partner for Chinese companies expanding into Europe.
The delegation also met with leaders from the university’s four faculties, including forestry, wood engineering, pedagogy, and economics, as well as industry stakeholders such as TAEG Zrt., FABUNIO, FAGOSZ, and GYSEV CARGO. Workshops focused on green innovation, circular economy solutions, and sustainable forestry practices.
This was the first official meeting between the University of Sopron and the Chinese delegation, with follow-up negotiations expected in the autumn. As Hungary’s Green University, Soproni Egyetem continues to lead in climate-friendly innovation, environmental stewardship, and practical knowledge transfer—goals that align with the long-term vision of both partners.
