The Speculative Fiction reading group will resume on September 11, 2025, as part of the open seminar series within the Master’s Programme in Environmental Humanities at Uppsala University. The group is jointly led by Professor Andrew Jones from the Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies and PhD student Elisa Viteri Márquez from the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
The reading group brings together themes from environmental humanities, archaeology, and speculative fiction. Participants engage with a diverse selection of academic and fictional texts, and also experiment with creating their own visions of possible futures.
Readings will include works by Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Donna Haraway, with an emphasis on speculative storytelling as a tool for imagining alternative ecological futures.
The group is open to students and researchers alike, with sessions taking place throughout the fall semester.
