Stockholm University has been ranked 100th in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, making it the third-highest ranked higher education institution in Sweden. The ranking places Karolinska Institutet first among Swedish universities at 50th globally, followed by Uppsala University at 93rd.
The ARWU evaluates universities based on research quality, considering factors such as the number of alumni and staff awarded Nobel Prizes, the number of highly cited researchers, and publications in leading journals like Nature and Science. Each year, the ranking assesses over 2,500 universities worldwide, publishing the top 1,000.
