The University of Lisbon hosted the Summer School on Urban Mobility and Healthy Aging (UMAIS) last month, in collaboration with EIT Urban Mobility, bringing together 27 students from across Europe. The program took place in two stages, first in Lisbon and then in Barcelona, with participants engaging in lectures, mentoring sessions, and hands-on workshops addressing the challenges of urban mobility for senior populations.
In Lisbon, students explored topics such as aging and functional capacity, urban design, public policies, accessibility, and entrepreneurship. Teams analyzed real-world problems, grounding their findings in evidence and understanding the perspective of senior citizens.
The second stage in Barcelona, hosted by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and CARNET, focused on solution development. Guided by mentors and invited experts, student teams created innovative concepts aimed at making cities more inclusive and citizen-centered. The program concluded with a showcase fair, where participants presented their proposals for inclusive urban solutions.
The UMAIS Summer School strengthened cross-cultural collaboration, promoted sustainable urban development, and empowered students with practical skills to design cities that accommodate the needs of aging populations.
