Budapest, April 30 — A Swedish student visiting Budapest has spoken about the challenges he has faced in forming social connections during his stay, describing a mixed experience in the Hungarian capital.
The student, who says he is of both Swedish and Hungarian heritage, reported feeling discouraged after an evening out on Sunday. According to his account, attempts to engage with people in a nightlife setting were met with unexpected remarks about his appearance, including comments questioning his Swedish identity.
He noted that such reactions left him feeling isolated, particularly as he identifies with both cultures. “It made me sad,” he said, reflecting on the encounter.
The individual also shared that he had previously spent nine months in military service on behalf of Hungary when he was younger, highlighting his personal connection to the country. Now based in Sweden, he had returned to Budapest for a short visit.
Despite the negative experience, he was careful to emphasise that his overall impression of the city remains positive. He suggested that the incident may have been influenced by perceptions of his appearance, adding that he still finds people in Budapest to be “lovely” in general.
The account underscores the complex nature of identity and belonging for individuals with multicultural backgrounds, particularly when travelling between countries they consider home.
