For the third consecutive year, Széchenyi István University’s Student Union organized a summer picnic called Gólyatali to help incoming first-year students build community and prepare for university life. Held along the banks of the Mosoni-Danube in Győr, the informal event welcomed nearly 500 new students, providing them with firsthand information and an opportunity to make early connections with peers before the academic year begins.
The Student Union believes that early connections lead to greater academic success, which is why they created this opportunity for new students to meet their future classmates in a relaxed setting. Organized by faculty, the event featured orientation-style stations, icebreaker games, and one-on-one conversations with experienced upperclassmen.
Vályi Nagy Dávid, president of the Student Union, opened the event, which took place near the Uni by the Rusty Coffee café. According to Malomsoki Milán, the vice president for event coordination, the record number of registrants reflects the growing demand for such events among new students from all nine faculties, including bachelor’s, master’s, and correspondence programs.
Many participants, like Zsófi Anikó Zsombok, who will begin law studies, or Máté Németh, a future architecture student, highlighted the importance of making friends and familiarizing themselves with the university environment before classes start. Others, like Hanna Bakos and Viktor Szilágyi, shared that Gólyatali was their only chance to connect before the semester begins, as they will be unable to attend Gólyahét later in August.
The university is now actively preparing for the official orientation week starting August 26, while finalizing enrollment logistics to welcome all new students for the autumn term.
