Széchenyi István University, in collaboration with the University of Oxford, is hosting an international text-reading and analysis workshop on the Middle Bengali language until mid-August. The event has brought together researchers from 11 countries, including the United States, India, Bangladesh, France, and Canada, to explore and analyse texts from various historical periods and literary genres.
The scientific program, initiated by Dr. Imre Bangha from Oxford University’s Hindi Department and originally from Győr, features distinguished scholars such as Professor Rebecca Manring from Indiana University’s Department of Religious Studies and Professor Thibaut d’Hubert from the University of Chicago’s Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations.
Dr. Eszter Lukács, Vice President for International and Strategic Relations at Széchenyi István University, highlighted the importance of such academic gatherings for strengthening international cooperation. Dr. Bangha expressed his joy at bringing the workshop to his hometown after several years of pandemic-related hiatus, noting the unique atmosphere provided by the campus’s location along the Mosoni-Danube.
Over the 11-day program, participants are engaging in reading sessions as well as cultural excursions, including visits to Pannonhalma Archabbey, the Bakony Hills, Lake Balaton, and a canoe trip on the backwaters of the Danube.
