On Sunday, September 7, 2025, a total lunar eclipse will occur at sunset, observable in its later phase around 20:30 CEST as a brick-red full Moon rising over the eastern horizon. This marks the first total lunar eclipse visible from the region in more than six years. During the event, the planet Saturn will also be visible nearby.
The eclipse occurs as the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. Depending on location, visibility will vary: in eastern Slovakia, the eclipse will be easier to observe during advanced twilight, while in western Czech regions, the Moon will rise after the eclipse begins. Maximum eclipse occurs at 20:11 CEST, with the total phase lasting 1 hour 22 minutes. The Moon will gradually exit the shadow by 22:55 CEST.
Public observation events will be hosted at several sites, including Planetarium Ostrava, WHOO Observatory at the Silesian University in Opava, and other observatories in Žebrák, Teplice, Ďáblice, and Slaný, offering telescopes, presentations, and guided viewing.
