A study led by the University of Oulu shows that long-term exposure to traffic noise above 53 decibels significantly raises the risk of depression and anxiety in children, adolescents, and young adults. Using Finnish register data from over 114,000 individuals, researchers found that noise becomes a major psychological stressor, especially for males and those without parental mental health disorders. The findings support urban planning and policy measures such as quieter bedroom locations, green spaces, noise-reducing tyres, and lower speed limits to protect mental health.
