Researchers at Umeå University, together with international colleagues, have analyzed data from millions of lakes to create global models treating lakes as a single composite system. This approach, using high-performance computing, uncovers new interactions and functional patterns, providing insights into freshwater roles in climate regulation. The study highlights structural differences between lakes in cold glacial regions and warmer climates, and shows that collectively, lakes resemble land more than oceans.
