University College Dublin has announced that Kathleen Lynch, Professor Emerita of Equality Studies, has been appointed to the Council of State by Catherine Connolly.The Council of State plays a key advisory role to the President of Ireland, offering guidance on important constitutional and national matters. Professor Lynch is among seven newly appointed members, recognized for their expertise and contributions across various fields.A distinguished sociologist, Kathleen Lynch has dedicated over three decades to advancing equality and social justice through research, teaching, and activism. At University College Dublin, she played a leading role in establishing the Equality Studies Centre and contributed significantly to the development of academic programs focused on social justice.Her academic career includes authoring more than 300 publications and contributing to global discussions on education and equality. She also served as a member of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission from 2020 to 2025.Alongside Lynch, Ciaran O hogartaigh, former UCD Professor and past President of the University of Galway, was also appointed to the Council.The appointments highlight the importance of academic expertise in shaping national policy and advisory structures, bringing valuable perspectives from higher education into public service.
