A new study involving researchers from University of Coimbra reveals that artificial intelligence generated content about conflict zones can significantly influence public perception and discourage tourism. The research shows that AI generated images, videos, and news can increase anxiety and exaggerate perceived risks, leading to a decline in people’s willingness to travel. The study focused particularly on tourism in Lebanon amid the Gaza conflict, highlighting how digital content can shape global travel behavior.According to the findings, AI driven media often amplifies sensational narratives and may lack proper context or verification. This contrasts with traditional journalism, which typically follows stricter editorial standards. As a result, users exposed to AI generated content are more likely to develop negative and generalized perceptions about destinations. The study also found that misinformation and manipulated visuals created by AI can directly impact local economies by reducing tourist flow, affecting businesses, employment, and regional development.Researchers emphasize the urgent need for better media literacy, transparent communication, and stronger regulation of AI generated content. They stress that without proper awareness, reliance on such content could distort reality and influence important personal decisions.
