The University of Graz has developed a new tool to detect dementia in people with intellectual disabilities, a group for whom conventional diagnostic methods are often unsuitable. Led by Professor Barbara Gasteiger-Klicpera, the research team created a digital application that considers individual needs, social contacts, personal preferences, and existing impairments.
Carers can use the tool without prior diagnostic knowledge to monitor cognitive abilities, communication, emotional behavior, and daily habits over time. By regularly comparing documentation, subtle changes are easier to identify, allowing for early interventions that can slow disease progression and improve quality of life.
The tool is available at www.digi-de.at and was developed with input from the disability care sector. Its creation was funded by the Styrian Chamber of Labour.
