The University of Oulu has launched its new Learning Support and Wellbeing Centre, providing a wide range of services aimed at improving students’ academic performance and overall wellbeing. Director Kauko Keskisärkkä encourages students to pursue their dreams while utilizing resources such as study guidance, career services, study psychologists, DigiLukiseula screening, and UniMove’s sports facilities.
Keskisärkkä, formerly Secretary General of the University of Oulu Student Union, highlighted the growing pressures on students, including tighter graduation timelines and challenges in gaining work experience. He emphasised that the centre particularly supports students facing learning barriers such as neurodivergence or dyslexia.
The joint service between the University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences now employs five study psychologists, including one dedicated to doctoral researchers, with a more flexible appointment system being introduced this autumn. Career services also help students shape their expertise and prepare for the job market.
“The centre focuses on the first-year student experience and engaging students effectively,” said Keskisärkkä, adding that staff training on student wellbeing will also be expanded.
Beyond his role, Keskisärkkä finds balance in nature, often skiing in Lapland, and remains known for his signature beret—an accessory he says has even inspired others to adopt the style.
