Researchers from the University of Sopron and the University of Szeged have joined forces to address the growing health crisis affecting walnut trees, a staple in Hungarian households. The joint project focuses on understanding the causes behind the rapid decline of walnut tree populations. Scientists discovered that the walnut husk fly introduces a complex mixture of bacteria and fungi into the trees, triggering infections that weaken their natural defense systems.By combining field research with advanced genetic and microbiological methods, the team aims to develop an eco-friendly biocontrol solution. Early experiments using beneficial bacteria and Trichoderma fungi have shown promising results, with treated trees demonstrating improved growth and resilience. The research is ongoing and expected to continue until 2027, with the ultimate goal of creating sustainable, chemical-free strategies to restore and protect walnut tree health.
