On World Water Day, University of Sopron highlights the importance of local water conservation. Dr. Kalicz Péter from the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences explains that Sopron’s forests act as natural sponges, slowing rainfall, promoting infiltration, and supporting underground reservoirs that sustain streams during dry summers.Simple steps for residents include redirecting roof runoff into gardens, creating “rain gardens” with water-loving plants, and collecting rainwater in tanks for later use. The university actively monitors water and forest interactions, emphasizing that every drop conserved locally contributes to the city’s long-term water security.
