The University of Sopron began its annual Balekhét on Sunday, bringing life and excitement to the city as first-year students arrived from across the country. The event included the traditional chariot pulling, ceremonial marches, and community programs designed to integrate newcomers into university life.
Balekhét celebrates more than 150 years of Selmec student traditions. Seniors, or “firmák,” welcome the first-year students, guiding them through university customs, city orientation, and practical support. Students also participate in mountain tours, city excursions, and evening social activities to strengthen community spirit.
The week combines practical assistance in enrollment and administration with cultural and social experiences, ensuring students feel part of a cohesive, lifelong university community.
