The University of Szeged (SZTE) is set to become the first regional higher education institution in Hungary to offer a dedicated Chinese-language specialization program, launching in September 2025. A delegation led by Prof. Dr. Péter Zakar, Vice-Rector for International and Public Relations, visited Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) to strengthen academic cooperation and finalize program details.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Altaic Studies at the University of Szeged’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, with support from SISU in Shanghai. The new two-year specialization (four semesters, 50 credits) will allow SZTE students to begin focused Chinese-language studies from their second year, including courses in speaking, writing, grammar, and Chinese cultural history.
During the visit, Dr. Béla Kempf, Senior Assistant Professor and expert in Altaic linguistics, presented the program’s academic vision, noting Hungary’s increasing interest in Chinese language education in line with global trends.
“This is just the beginning,” said Prof. Zakar. “We aim to launch a full undergraduate degree program (BA) in Chinese Language and Culture by September 2026.”
This growing collaboration between the University of Szeged and Shanghai International Studies University highlights a significant academic and cultural bridge between Hungary and China, fostering internationalization and linguistic education for the next generation of students.
