The University of Szeged has commenced a historic development project for the SZTE id. Jancsó Miklós Dormitory, aiming to expand student housing by 240 premium places through a HUF 3.6 billion investment. A ceremonial foundation stone laying took place on June 17, 2025, in the presence of government and university leaders.
This marks the largest dormitory infrastructure initiative at SZTE in decades. The new “B” and “C” wings will provide 4,806 m² of living space, including 30 double rooms (B Building) and 86 rooms of various sizes (C Building), offering affordable and community-based accommodation near the campus.
During the event, Dr. Veronika Varga-Bajusz, State Secretary for Higher Education, emphasized that quality student living is key to university excellence. Rector Prof. Dr. László Rovó stated the investment reflects SZTE’s strategic autonomy and long-term vision, alongside other projects like the Regional Cyclotron Center.
A symbolic time capsule, including university plans and a commemorative medal honoring Nobel laureate Prof. Katalin Karikó, was also placed in the foundation.
The residences are expected to be ready within two years, strengthening SZTE’s regional and international appeal while easing student housing pressures.
