The University of Theatre and Film Arts (SZFE) has successfully completed the first academic year of its groundbreaking second unit directing training, launched in 2024 as a unique initiative in Hungarian higher education. Led by department head Buda Gulyás, the program trained nine experienced film professionals from various disciplines—directing, editing, cinematography, and screenwriting—equipping them with the skills to handle large-scale productions, action scenes, and VFX integration.
The year’s highlight was the collaborative short film Exit, shot over three days with 40 stunt performers, providing students hands-on experience from pre-production to post-production. The training emphasized teamwork, adaptability, and the importance of aligning with the main director’s vision. Students also completed individual projects that combined dramaturgy with action and VFX elements, meeting the degree’s professional requirements. Gulyás noted that the program reflects the growing importance of the second unit profession in Hungary, preparing graduates for both domestic and international productions.
