Adam Starowicz, a PhD student from the Faculty of Geoengineering at the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM), completed a two-month research internship in Romania under the NAWA STER programme, collaborating with the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași and later with Moldova State University.
Starowicz’s research focuses on photosynthetic microbial fuel cells, which use bacteria to break down organic matter, producing both electricity and treated wastewater. His doctoral project also explores introducing microalgae to enhance biofuel and pharmaceutical applications.
During the internship, he participated in experiments on carbon dioxide absorption led by Professor Igor Cretescu and conducted additional research in Moldova, gaining new insights and international mentoring experience.
Starowicz praised the NAWA STER programme for enabling doctoral students to build global scientific connections and described the experience as both scientifically enriching and inspiring.
