
Matti Latvaaho has begun his tenure as Vice Rector for Research at the University of Oulu, focusing on strengthening multidisciplinary research across the university’s eight faculties. Known for leading Finland’s 6G research, Latvaaho plans to enhance strategic funding, international recognition, and societal impact. He aims to position the university as a global research leader while fostering collaboration, excellence, and innovation.
Latvaaho has a long history at the University of Oulu, having served as Professor of Communications Technology and Director of the Centre for Wireless Communications. Since 2018, he has led the world’s first 6G research and innovation programme, expanding Finland’s role in telecommunications and integrating 6G technologies into critical sectors such as health, energy, security, and defense.
