A historian from Vrije Universiteit Brussel has uncovered that the euthanasia debate in Belgium began much earlier than previously believed.Research by Niels De Nutte shows that public discussions on euthanasia date back to the 1930s—around 60 years earlier than earlier estimates. His award-winning doctoral study traces how ethical, legal, and societal views on end-of-life decisions evolved over the 20th century. The study also highlights international influences from countries like the Netherlands and the United States, as well as the role of bioethics and changing social attitudes in shaping the debate.
