A new book by Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) professor of neurology Sebastiaan Engelborghs and journalist Barbara Ceuleers offers hope in the fight against dementia. Titled Forget Dementia, the book highlights that nearly half of future dementia cases can be delayed or prevented by addressing 14 lifestyle and health risk factors.
Engelborghs and Ceuleers emphasize that dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing. Factors such as high blood pressure, insufficient exercise, hearing loss, air pollution, and social isolation all play a role in dementia risk. The authors also share personal experiences and practical strategies for prevention, advocating for early intervention and proactive brain health.
The book serves as both a wake-up call and a practical guide for individuals seeking to reduce their risk of neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting research from VUB and collaborations such as the WW FINGERS global consortium.
