A team from the Warsaw University of Technology has founded the Social Energy Initiative, aiming to create Poland’s first biogas-based energy cooperative. The project, led by Jakub Fenert along with graduates Natalia Sobolewska-Hektus and Julia Ługowska, combines biogas production with the cooperative model to provide rural communities with energy independence and lower costs. Originating from the Bio-Based Innovation Student Challenge Europe competition, the concept—called BioCommunity—won first place in Poland and reached the top five in Europe. The team now focuses on public education, partnerships, and advisory work for municipalities and businesses interested in renewable energy projects. Their long-term goal is to establish operational cooperatives powered by bio-waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting a fair energy transition.
