Dr. Gergely Salát, a leading China expert from Pázmány Péter Catholic University and senior researcher at the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs, believes that fentanyl is more than a public health crisis — it’s a strategic weapon in US–China power politics.
In a recent InfoRádió interview, Salát explained that since the Trump administration, American leaders have accused China of intentionally flooding US markets with fentanyl to destabilize society. These allegations, he notes, have also been used to justify economic measures, including tariffs on Chinese goods.
“Washington treats the fentanyl crisis not just as a tragedy but as part of a larger geopolitical confrontation,” Salát said.
His analysis ties drug trafficking directly into foreign policy, underlining the complex interplay of health, security, and diplomacy in today’s global conflicts.
