
Former Slovak president Zuzana Čaputová delivered the annual J. L. Fischer Memorial Lecture at Palacký University Olomouc, focusing on the crisis of democracy from both institutional and personal perspectives.In her address, Čaputová stressed that democracy is not a fixed state but a living process that requires constant care, responsibility, and civic engagement. She highlighted global democratic erosion, warning against weakened rule of law, attacks on media, and the growing frustration of citizens who feel unheard. According to her, rebuilding trust in democratic institutions is essential to prevent the rise of authoritarian tendencies.Reflecting on her presidency (2019–2024), she emphasized the importance of integrity, self-reflection, and service in political leadership. Despite facing intense pressure during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine, she affirmed her commitment to democratic principles, stating she will continue to serve the values she believes in.The lecture concluded with a discussion on women in politics, hybrid threats, and her future public engagement.
