New research has confirmed that the Old Irish Goat shares a direct genetic link with goats in Ireland dating back to the Late Bronze Age. The study combined archaeology, radiocarbon dating, and advanced genetic analysis to trace the breed’s lineage over three millennia.Analysis of ancient goat remains from sites in Armagh and Antrim revealed their strongest genetic similarity to the critically endangered Old Irish Goat alive today. This continuity highlights the breed as a living connection to Ireland’s agricultural and cultural past. The goats also hold a deep place in Irish folklore, including the Puck Fair festival in Kerry, where a goat is crowned “King Puck” each year. Researchers say the study underscores the importance of preserving this rare breed, which has survived despite modern population declines and inbreeding.
