A new academic book examining the cultural history and social impact of lotteries in Europe has been presented at Utrecht University. The publication explores how the dream of winning a lottery and starting a completely new life has influenced literature, theatre, film, and popular culture across centuries.Researchers involved in the project studied the historical development of lotteries and their connections to social mobility, politics, and economic growth. Historical examples show that gambling systems were sometimes linked to political processes or even social welfare initiatives, reflecting the complex role lotteries played in society. The study also highlights the economic influence of lotteries in Europe, noting how early state lotteries stimulated new businesses and entrepreneurship. At the same time, researchers point out the longstanding ethical tensions, as institutions that warned against gambling also used lotteries to fund public or charitable projects.
