A new report from the National Secretariat for Gender Research at Göteborgs universitet examines how gender norms, power structures, and organizational practices shape opportunities in northern Sweden’s ongoing societal transformation. Focusing on Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, and Jämtland, the study highlights that male-dominated industries retain resources and status, while sectors employing more women, such as welfare and care, are often deprioritized. The research emphasizes that women’s greater responsibility for unpaid household and care work limits access to full-time industrial jobs, risking the reproduction of unequal conditions despite high female labor participation. The report serves as a knowledge base for regional development and encourages policymakers and organizations to integrate a gender perspective for sustainable and equitable labor markets.
