A major research report on the Irish language has been officially launched at Maynooth University by Catherine Connolly. Titled “Ár gCampas, Ár dTeanga” (“Our Campus, Our Language”), the study examines Irish language ability, usage, and attitudes among students and staff. The research involved over 3,000 participants and highlights strong support for the Irish language within the university community. Around 90% of respondents believe Irish should be promoted on campus, while a significant portion reported having intermediate or higher proficiency. However, the study also found that many fluent speakers rarely use the language in daily university life. The report outlines 25 practical recommendations to strengthen Irish language use, including expanding learning opportunities, increasing visibility on campus, and introducing more bilingual services. The findings will play an important role in shaping future language planning, especially under Ireland’s updated Official Languages legislation.University leaders described the study as a milestone for higher education in Ireland, reinforcing Maynooth’s long-standing commitment to promoting Irish and building a more bilingual academic environment.
