Thomas Hertog, renowned Belgian cosmologist and collaborator of Stephen Hawking, was featured in the Grandes Conférences Namuroises at Université de Namur. Hertog discussed his book L’origine du temps, which develops Hawking’s latest theories on the origins of the universe, including a view of the Big Bang as the origin of time and physical laws. He highlighted how his work integrates fundamental cosmology with philosophical reflection, and emphasized the importance of scientific culture and public outreach. Hertog also shared insights from his twenty-year collaboration with Hawking and outlined how emerging observational tools, such as gravitational waves, could shed light on the earliest phases of the universe.
