Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), in collaboration with Göteborgs universitet, use dendrochronology to determine whether historic string instruments, including Stradivarius violins, are genuine. By analyzing tree-ring patterns and comparing them with European tree-ring databases, they can detect forgeries and date instruments accurately. This method also provides insight into how the wood’s growth under historical climate conditions contributed to the instruments’ renowned sound quality. Professor Paolo Cherubini will present these findings in a free seminar at Göteborgs universitet on 4 March 2026.
