A researcher from Luleå University of Technology will travel to Antarctica to help protect the historic remains of Sweden’s first Antarctic expedition. Geohydrologist Jenny Lindblom will study how thawing permafrost on Snow Hill Island threatens the early 20th-century research station led by Otto Nordenskjöld.
The project will explore the use of thermopiles—tubes filled with carbon dioxide designed to cool and stabilize the ground—to prevent erosion and collapse. Conducted within the university’s Centre for the Arctic and the Antarctic and in collaboration with the Argentine Antarctic Institute, the initiative addresses both heritage preservation and climate impact research in polar regions.
