A new cross-border initiative is strengthening wildlife protection and sustainable management along the Romania–Hungary border. The WILD-SM programme focuses on monitoring and protecting wildlife populations that frequently cross national boundaries, addressing risks related to biodiversity, animal health, and the regional economy.During the one-year project, experts conducted species inventories, population surveys, laboratory testing, and field sampling, with particular attention to big and small game species. The research assessed genetic diversity, population density, and disease transmission risks between wild and domestic animals.A Regional Border Wildlife Monitoring Centre has been established to provide long-term data collection and coordinated management based on unified principles. The programme follows the One Health approach, recognizing the interconnected health of animals, humans, and the environment.Supported by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme, the initiative contributes to epidemic prevention, food chain safety, and sustainable biodiversity management in the region.
