An international research team, including Martin Persson from Chalmers, has analyzed the conversion of natural grasslands and wetlands into farmland and pasture worldwide. The study finds these ecosystems are being converted nearly four times faster than forests, driven mainly by demand for meat, grains, nuts, and oil crops. The researchers emphasize the need for comprehensive conservation strategies beyond forests, considering biodiversity, carbon storage, and global food supply chains.
