Mary Immaculate College (MIC) has marked the completion of the MeDeMap – Mapping Media for Democracy project, a three-year European research initiative funded by the EU Horizon programme and involving ten universities. The project explored how media systems can better support democracy by improving transparency, accountability, and citizen participation. At MIC, researchers conducted interviews and focus groups to understand how people interact with news and media in their daily lives. A key part of the Irish contribution was the Citizens’ Parliament on Media and Democracy, where 20 participants developed 22 recommendations to strengthen democratic media, including improved media literacy in schools, stronger protections for journalists, and greater regulation of large online platforms. The project’s findings will continue through an interactive map tracking the state of media and democracy across Europe.
