The University of Miskolc has highlighted the evolving role of humanities education through an in-depth interview with Dr. Illésné Dr. Kovács Mária, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. In the interview, the dean reflects on her academic journey, noting that her passion for literature, history, and languages began during her secondary school years. This early interest shaped her decision to pursue a career in the humanities, eventually leading to a long-standing role at the university.Dr. Kovács Mária emphasized that the faculty is more than just a workplace for her, describing it as a deeply personal and professional commitment. As she approaches the end of her term as dean, her primary goal is to leave behind a stable, forward-looking faculty that is academically strong and financially sustainable. She identified continuous renewal as the faculty’s greatest strength. Over the years, adapting to changing student interests and labor market demands has been essential. While traditional humanities programs have seen fluctuating demand, newer and more practice-oriented programs—especially in teacher training and special education—have gained significant popularity.Addressing the relevance of humanities degrees, the dean stressed that graduates develop key transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, and analytical abilities. These competencies enable alumni to succeed across diverse fields, including business, public administration, and communications. She also highlighted the growing importance of integrating artificial intelligence into education while maintaining a critical approach. According to her, students must learn not only how to use AI tools but also how to evaluate their outputs responsibly.Looking ahead, Dr. Kovács Mária believes that the mission of universities extends beyond knowledge transfer. Institutions must shape students into thoughtful, engaged individuals capable of understanding complex global challenges and contributing meaningfully to society.
