
Czech Republic | Masaryk University celebrated its annual Dies Academicus 2026 ceremony, presenting university medals and Rector’s Awards to 24 outstanding individuals for their contributions to academia, research, and civil society.During the event, university leaders emphasized the vital role of higher education in defending democratic values and fostering critical thinking. The top honors presented included:Gold Medals: Awarded to activist Michael Kocáb (human rights), Mikuláš Bek (campus infrastructure development), Václav Suchý (pharmaceutical education), and the University of Tartu (international partnership).Silver & Bronze Medals: Recognized jazz musician Milan Kašuba, photographer Jiří Salik Sláma, children’s hospice founder Radka Vernerová, law professor Vladimír Týč, and UFC champion Jiří Procházka.Rector’s Awards: Celebrated key research and civic milestones, including the iGEM Brno Team (global synthetic biology winners), Tomáš Fiala (ERC Grant recipient), Mary O’Connell (RNA biology pioneer), and student Jiří Němec (humanitarian aid for Ukraine).
