Denmark | A new study from the University of Copenhagen suggests that one of Denmark’s most widely used intelligence tests may underestimate the abilities of bilingual young people, even when they are fluent in Danish and educated entirely within the Danish school system.Researchers tested 48 Arabic Danish bilingual university students and found that many scored lower than expected on several sections of the WAIS IV intelligence test despite strong academic records. The findings indicate that language background and cultural experiences may influence test performance, including in tasks often considered culture neutral.According to the researchers, the results raise concerns about how intelligence test scores are interpreted in educational, clinical, and legal settings. The study highlights the importance of considering cultural and linguistic factors when assessing cognitive abilities and making decisions based on IQ test results.
